Needle Stick Injuries

A needle stick or sharps injury is an incident that causes a needle, blade, or another medical instrument to penetrate the skin.
According to NHS guidelines the best course of action is;

  • Encourage the injury to bleed under running water
  • Wash the wound using running water and use plenty of soap
  • Never scrub or suck the wound
  • Dry the wound and cover with a waterproof dressing
  • Seek medical advice and report the injury to your employer if applicable.
