A needle stick or sharps injury is an incident that causes a needle, blade, or another medical instrument to penetrate the skin.
According to NHS guidelines the best course of action is;
- Encourage the injury to bleed under running water
- Wash the wound using running water and use plenty of soap
- Never scrub or suck the wound
- Dry the wound and cover with a waterproof dressing
- Seek medical advice and report the injury to your employer if applicable.
